Persons involved in the Project
Iceland GeoSurvey (ISOR) a governmental institution. It is a service and research institute providing specialised services to the Icelandic power industry, the Icelandic government and foreign companies, in particular in the field of geothermal sciences and utilisation. ISOR was established July 1st 2003 and took over all responsibilities of the former GeoScience Division of Orkustofnun, the National Energy Authority of Iceland. ISOR and its precedents stand for over 50 years of experience in geothermal research and have been the main scientific leaders in the successful geothermal development in Iceland. By its 50 employees (40 scientists and engineers) ISOR is the largest geo scientific institution in Iceland. It has three main departments. The geological department covers mainly geological mapping, borehole geology, drilling supervision, geochemistry, and environmental studies. The physics department covers geophysical exploration, well logging, reservoir physics and modelling as well as consultancy on resource management. The engineering department covers drilling technology and geothermal utilisation. (ROS) ISOR has long lasting experience with participation in geothermal projects abroad, for example in Central America, East Africa, China, Russia, and Central Europe. Furthermore the geothermal experts of ISOR have, for more then 25 years, been training students at the United Nations University (UNU) Geothermal Training Programme and have a firm knowledge and overview over geothermal energy worldwide. In this project ISOR will be backed up and financially supported by Orkuveita Reykjavikur (OR), which is the main geothermal operator in Iceland, providing geothermal energy for heating of about 60% of houses in Iceland and the largest producer of electricity from geothermal resources.
