The University of Pisa has its origins in the XI century and presently is one of the leading Italian State universities. According to its mission statement, the University of Pisa is committed to education
through an awareness of the frontiers of human understanding, the creation of new knowledge through basic research, the promotion of research across a broad front, which creates a unique capacity
to reconfigure activities in response to new opportunities and problems.
It has approximately 50000 students, 1900 university teachers and 1500 members of staff in the administrative and technical side, distributed in 11 Faculties and 57 Departments. Studies on Earth
Sciences have been active since 1500. The Department of Earth Sciences, which belongs to the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, was established in1982 through the merging
of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology and the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography.
Presently it covers research and teaching in the field of Geology and Paleontology, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry and Mineral Resources.
In the geophysics field UNIPI has developed major experience in seismic data processing (4D-time lapse seismic, AVO and multi-component seismic).
