PAS - RENEWABLE ENERGY DEPARTMENT is one of the departments of the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute at the Polish Academy of Science (RED MEERI PAS). The Institute is a scientific and research unit involved in complex research connected with a wide range of issues regarding mineral resources economy. The scope of institute activities encompasses feasibility studies regarding resource extraction, the documenting, management, processing, ecology and economic assessment of mineral resources in the domestic economy with world market considerations. RED MEERI PAS co-ordinate activities of Polish geothermal resource assessment and development for direct heat use, balneology and agriculture purposes, essential for old wells utilization and/or new wells localization, geothermal plant concepts, evaluating Economic Viability of the geothermal project and others renewable energies. RED MEERI PAS, conducts research and expertise activities on:

  • Geothermal water deposits in different regions of Poland and the analysis of geothermal water utilization in cities and commune management plans
  • Develops geological projects and provides complete project management services
  • Has required equipment for exploratory boreholes
  • Performs environmental monitoring studies for the purpose of recognition of the range and directions of changes in the atmosphere after introduction of cleaner energy sources
  • Assesses the geothermal potential in chosen regions of the country and geological units
  • Analysis of ecological benefits resulting from the use of renewable energy resources
  • Sustainable development of selected regions of Poland The Renewable Energy Department is also a center of ecological education. In laboratories, presented are environmentally friendly, technological solutions ranging from energy-saving building features and construction methods, systems and equipment for water heating including heat pumps, photovoltaic batteries, and a system for optimization of a wind power station.

The department is also editor of the scientific bimonthly “Exploration Technology, Geosynoptics and Geothermal Energy (TPGGiG)”. MEERI PAS has recently participated in two projects of the 5th FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME: LICYMIN (G1RD-CT-2000-00162) and CLENSYS (Contract No. ICA-CT-2002-60020).

  • Co-ordinator of specific WP6
  • Acquisition and processing of seismic and magnetotelluric data
  • Methodology for geothermal exploration and production
  • Dissemination
